Abstract
1323673 Artificial limbs NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORP 10 June 1970 [13 June 1969] 30168/69 Heading A5R [Also in Divisions B4 B8 and G1] A terminal device for an artificial limb comprises a plurality of members 10 adapted for application of force therebetween to grip an object, at least one of said members being provided with a deformable object-engaging device in the form of a substantially non- stretchable flexible sealed container 13 enclosing a volume of fluent granular material. The container may be subdivided into elements having elastic walls (6) Fig. 3 (not shown), enclosed by a substantially non-stretchable container wall (5). The containers may be provided as indicated at 13 on the inner surfaces ofthe members 10, or on the outside as at 14 for gripping the interior of a hollow object. The granular material may be rendered conductive by the inclusion of carbon mixed with talc, the resistance between two electrodes (8) providing a measure of the gripping pressure. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 1,086,541.
