Abstract

1323278 Radio navigation; aerials MARCONI CO Ltd 20 April 1972 [20 April 1971] 18370/72 Headings H4A and H4D An aerial commutating arrangement such as is used for a Doppler V.H.F. omni-range system, and in which the movement of an aerial around a circle is simulated by sequentially activating the fixed elements of a circular array, features the division of the elements into two groups each occupying a semi-circle, and each having a respective group distributer, to which the elements are connected via individual switches, and to which either upper or low side-band R.F. power is fed via a changeover switch. As described a circular array comprises 48 elements. The odd-numbered elements 1, 3, 5, ... 23 occupying one semi-circle are connected via switches to a group distributer 51, which is also connected to a changeover switch 53. The odd-numbered elements 25, 27, 29, ... 47 occupying the other semi-circle are connected via switches to a group distributer 52, which is also connected to the changeover switch 53. A switch is also provided for each element so that it may be earthed when not in use, to prevent interaction with radiating elements. In the Figure, the switch 53 is positioned to supply LSB power to the distributer 51 and USB power to the distributer 52. The element 3 is connected to the distributer 51 and the diametrically opposite element 27 is connected to the distributer 52, all other elements being earthed. Sequential switching takes place so that the simulated rotation takes place in onethirtieth of a second, the next pair of odd elements to be activated being nos. 5 and 29, when nos. 3 and 27 are disconnected from the distributers, and are earthed. When the elements 25 and 1 are to be activated, following the elements 23 and 47, the switch 23 changes over, so that USB power is supplied to the distributer 51, and LSB power is supplied to the distributer 52. The element 1 may lie substantially in the direction of magnetic north with respect to the centre of the array. A similar arrangement is provided for the evennumbered elements of the array, but in order more closely to simulate the rotation of a radiating aerial at constant speed and to reduce amplitude modulation caused by the switching operation, bursts of energy from adjacent elements are arranged to overlap in time by half the burst period. That is, sideband energy is switched directly between consecutive oddnumbered elements (1, 3, 5,...) and is concurrently, but displaced in phase by half a burst period, switched between consecutive even-numbered elements (2, 4, 6 ...).
