Abstract

1323076 Leak detectors UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY 18 Jan 1971 [23 Oct 1969] 52089/69 Heading G1N Leaks from apparatus containing a liquid alkali metal e.g. sodium, are detected by two or more touching aluminium conductors with anodized coatings, connected to an EMF source and an ammeter. The sodium corrodes the aluminium oxide coatings to reduce the resistance between conductors and is indicated by the increase in current. The two conductors may form a mesh, or comprise a wire on a sheet, or both may be made from anodized aluminium expanded sheet. One or two spaced conductors may be wrapped round a liquid sodium conducting pipe and covered by a leakage retaining jacket.
