Abstract

1322796 Devitrified glass ENGLISH ELECTRIC CO Ltd 8 July 1971 [14 July 1970] 34113/70 Heading C1M [Also in Division B3] A method of making a surface-devitrified glass article comprises forming the article from a surface-devitrifiable glass, abrading the surface of the article so formed, and heat-treating the abraded article to form a devitrified surface layer. As described, articles in the form of blocks are cut from bars of ZnO-Al 2 O 3 -SiO 2 glass. The blocks are annealed and have their faces polished and are then placed in a beaker containing abrasive, such as sand or silicon carbide, vibrated at 50 HZ to form a " fluidized bed " for 15 to 60 mins., the abrasive being of 220 grit size. After abrading, articles are heated at 200‹ to 750‹ C. for 20 to 30 minutes to devitrify the surfaces which results in increasing the strength and/or transparency of the articles.
