1322028 Packaging ELSON & ROBBINS Ltd 22 May 1972 [21 April 1971] 10364/71 Heading B8C In a method of packaging articles such as foam-filled cushions &c., having a comparatively high volume to weight ratio the article, as shown rolled up sheet foam 7, is placed in an air-impervious envelope 8, the air is removed from the envelope, for example by introducing therein a vacuum nozzle 2, so that the envelope, and the sheet foam therein, collapses under atmospheric pressure, the reduced-volume envelope is placed in a container 9 only just large enough to receive the reduced-volume envelope, and air is reintroduced into the envelope to restore atmospheric pressure therein so that the rolled sheet of foam 7 is contained within the container. The nozzle 2, supported by a stand 1, is connected to a pipe 4 which has a shut-off valve 5 and a restrictor 6 and which is connected to a source of vacuum. As shown, the container 9 comprises a rigid sleeve 9 which is placed over the envelope 8 while the latter, containing the roll of foam, remains on the nozzle 2, the latter being subsequently removed to re-admit air into the envelope 8. The container 9 may be of plastics, or textile, material and may be reinforced by bands of metal, or plastics. The container may consist of multi-ply paper sleeving.
