Abstract

1321828 Educational systems STRUCTURAL COMMUNICATION SYSTEMS Ltd 19 April 1971 [30 Oct 1969] 53274/69 Heading G5G A viewing system such as television is modified so as to enable viewers to take an active part in programmes. As shown, a basic programme 1 and supplementary programmes 2 are available as inputs to a TV Set A. The programmes may be recorded on a single video tape. Periodically, the viewer is presented with a problem the response to which is required to be selected from a vocabulary matrix B which may consist for example of words, phrases and symbols in numbered squares on printed sheets. The selection is keyed or switched into a keyboard C and evaluated at D against standard responses for the programme. Combinations of responses are permitted. The output from D consists of impulses which identify a recorded comment most appropriate to the viewer's response. Potential responses are grouped so that only 6-10 comments are required to be stored. A recording of the identified comment is retrieved from comment (tape) store E and displayed by way of input converter F and interrupter 4. The keyboard C comprises at least 9 and preferably 24 or 25 keys. If 24 or 25 then 20 of them relate to responses to problems and the rest enable viewers to make comments whereby for example supplementary explanation may be called in from programmes 2. Instead of TV, an audiovisual system employing films and tape recordings may be utilized. Interruption may be controlled by an instructor. Comments may be presented audibly. Computer means may be provided to process responses of groups of viewers.
