Abstract

1321598 Screw - and - nut mechanism NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORP 18 Sept 1970 [22 Sept 1969 2 Dec 1969] 46470/69 and 58802/69 Heading F2Q A traversing mechanism comprises a mounting 1 containing linear traverse means and rotational means for traversing either, directly, a first leadscrew 9, the linear traverse means comprising a worm 6 and worm-wheel 5 which rotates nuts 7a, 7b to linearly traverse the leadscrew 9, and the rotational means comprising a worm 26 and worm-wheel 25 arranged to rotate the leadscrew 9 about its axis or prevent it from rotating during a linear traverse, or, in the absence of the leadscrew 9, of traversing or rotating a second leadscrew 44 mounted in a cartridge 40. A probe 45 is attached to the second leadscrew 44 which carries a nut 48 having splines 49 which are adapted to engage internal keyways 43 in the cartridge 40. A tube 51 is internally keyed to the leadscrew 44 and carries external splines 53 which are adapted to engage splines 65 in a bolt 64 which is adapted to screw in to a bolt 11a, Fig. 4. A piston 46 is secured to the leadscrew 44 and is a sliding fit within the shell 40, being keyed thereto by a key 47. In the case of the first leadscrew 9, a bolt 11 is keyed thereto and is screwed to a casing member 10 by a screw-thread having the same pitch but being of opposite hand to that of the leadscrew 9. Bolt 11a is provided with a similar screw-thread. Thus bolts 11, 11a provide compensation to prevent relative linear movement of leadscrews 9, 44 in rotational traverse. (For Figures see next page)
