Abstract

1321474 Linear motors BRITISH IRON & STEEL RESEARCH ASSOCIATION 19 Oct 1971 [19 Oct 1970] 49569/70 Heading H2A [Also in Division G3] A linear induction motor is used to correct lateral position errors in a moving metal web. As shown, the motor comprises annular core members 66, 68 arranged to form a rotatable roller over which the web (constituting the motor secondary) passes. Windings 62 are mounted in sleeves 63 set into recesses 64 in the core and are connected to slip rings via channels 70. If the web is ferrous a coating 74 of P.T.F.E. is used to facilitate movement of the web in the direction of the core axis. The magnetic circuit may be completed by an arcuate ferrous member arranged on the outside of the web (Fig. 11, not shown). In alternative embodiments one or more flat motor primaries are disposed on one or both sides of the web, spacing being maintained by a gas cushion (Figs. 7, 8, not shown). Energization is controlled in response to signals from a web edge detector.
