Abstract

1321249 Photo-electric element analysis YOKOGAWA ELECTRIC WORKS Ltd 7 Oct 1970 [8 Oct 1969 9 Oct 1969 (2)] 47625/70 Heading G1A The concentration of a high atomic number element contained in a sample of a hydrocarbon compound is measured by determining the transmissivity of the sample to the fluorescent X-rays derived from the bombardment of a target 9 by the radiation from a radio-active source 8. The apparatus shown - Fig. 5- monitors the concentration of sulphur in petroleum oil flowing through a measuring chamber 10, but the element chosen may be any one that has a higher mass absorption co-efficient than both carbon and hydrogen. The X-ray wavelength is in the range 23-24À5 KeV, which is produced by bombarding a target of Ag, Sn, In or Cd with the radiation from <SP>241</SP> Am. To select a particular mean wavelength, the target is made of more than one of the above elements, e.g. in sectored form Fig. 2, (not shown), and may be provided with a suitable mask. The output from a scintillation detector or ionisation chamber 11 has to be corrected for variations in density and temperature of the flowing petroleum. The density of the liquid is measured at 15 by a density detector, e.g. of the vibration type, whose output is supplied to a density converter 21. Temperatures are measured by resistance thermometers 17, 18. Reference values of temperature and density are set on bridge 19 and density converter 21 respectively. The voltage output ep1 from this converter represents the difference between the measured density and the reference density at the reference temperature, and is converted to a current signal at 22. One output ep3 from converter 22 is supplied to a potentiometer 24 on which is set a selected reference sulphur concentration. The output from amplifier 12 is hence an exponential concentration signal corrected for density and temperature fluctuations. This signal is integrated at 29 and linearized at 30 before being compared with the reference density signal ep2 in divider 31. The output from the divider 31 is displayed on a meter.
