Abstract

1321167 Biaxially oriented polyamide films TOYO BOSEKI KK 3 Dec 1971 [4 Dec 1970 (2)] 56122/71 Heading B5B An undrawn film of a polyamide is subjected to simultaneous or stepwise biaxial drawing at a temperature within a range as calculated according to the following inequality in the case of the simultaneous drawings:- - 10 W + 120 + 12 log(8/1000)>T#- 6 W + 80 or according to the following inequality in the case of the stepwise drawing:- - 10 W + 130 + 7 log (8/1000)>T # - 6 W + 80 wherein W is the moisture content (% by weight) of the undrawn film, # is the drawing speed (%/min), defined as:- Length after drawing # = ------- Î 100¸Drawing Time (mins) Length before drawing and T is the drawing temperature (‹C.), said polyamide containing in the molecule not less than 70% (mol) of the repeating unit constituted with metaxylene diamine or its mixture with paraxylylenediamine (of which the content is not more than 30% (mol) on the basis of the total amount of metaxylylenediamine and paraxylylenediamine) and an α,#-aliphatic dicarboxylic acid having 6 to 10 carbon atoms. The undrawn film may be made of a polyamide having a relative viscosity of 2À0 to 4À0, determined in solution in 96% sulphuric acid at a concentration of 1g./100 ml. at 25‹ C., and suitably has a moisture content of 0À1 to 5À0% by weight. Drawing may be effected simultaneously with a drawing speed of from 500 to 50,000%/min., or stepwise with a drawing speed of 500 to 500,000%/min. in the longitudinal direction and 500 to 50,000%/min. in the transverse direction; the ratio of the drawing speed in the longitudinal direction to that in the transverse direction may be from 0À5 to 2. After drawing, the film may be heat-treated, suitably at a temperature lying between 5‹ C. above the temperature used in drawing the undrawn film and the melting temperature of the drawn film, for a period of not more than 5 mins. Film so drawn shows enhanced tensile properties, transparency and gas barrier properties, especially a much lower permeability to oxygen than conventional polyamide or polyester films.
