1321069 Purifying gas SHELL INTERNATIONALE RESEARCH MAATSCHAPPIJ BV 19 Aug 1970 [21 Aug 1969] 39897/70 Heading C5E In the preparation of gases containing hydrogen and carbonic oxide by partial oxidation of a liquid feed containing heavy hydrocarbon oil, the gas so formed is washed with water, forming an aqueous suspension of soot and ash particles. Soot is recovered from the suspension by agglomeration with a hydrocarbon oil lighter than the oil used as feed, and at least part of the soot agglomerates is incorporated in the feed; ash particles are removed from the aqueous phase by flotation, after the soot agglomerates have been separated, and at least part of the purified water is recycled to the gas-washing step. The heavy oil feed may be a residual oil, and the light oil used as agglomerating agent may be a distillate, e.g. gas oil or kerosine. A surface-active agent, e.g. a N-alkyl-1,3-propandiamine, in which the alkyl group is derived from coconut oil, soy-bean oil or tall oil, may be present during the agglomeration. The agglomerates may be removed by sieving.
