Abstract

1320792 Substoichiometric oxides of uranium and plutonium COMMISSARIAT A L'ENERGIE ATOMIQUE 17 June 1970 [27 June 1969] 29417/70 Heading C1A [Also in Division G6] A sintered non-stoichiometric oxide of uranium and/or plutonium is prepared by sintering a powdered oxide of U and/or Pu with sufficient C to provide the desired stoichiometry by removal of O as CO, grinding the product and sintering again, both sintering steps being performed in the absence of an oxidizing atmosphere. One or both sintering steps may be performed at 1500-1800‹ C., at 10<SP>-4</SP> torr or in a reducing atmosphere. 3-5% unsintered mixture may be added at the second stage to provide a dense product, or 0À2-5% organic binder may be added to provide a low density product. For the first step the particles are preferably <30 Á whilst for the second step the size should be within the range 30-350 Á.
