1320719 Self-heating cosmetics COLGATEPALMOLIVE 24 July 1970 [7 Aug 1969] 36070/70 Heading A5B [Also in Division C5] A self-heating cosmetic product comprises constituents stored in separate zones in at least one container, in one of which zones (A) there is present an organic sulphinic acid or sulphinate reductant of the formula R SO 2 M, wherein R is an unsubstituted or substituted hydrocarbyl selected from C 10 -C 16 alkyl, phenyl, C 1 -C 3 alkyl phenyl or C 10 -C 16 alkylphenyl and the substituents, which may be 1 to 3 in number, are C 1 -C 4 alkoxy, holgen, hydroxy, sulphonic or carboxyl; and m is H or salt-forming cation which is NH 4 , C 1 -C 4 alkanolamine, an alkali metal, an alkaline earth metal, zinc, tin, magnesium or aluminium, and in other of which zones (B) there is present at least the stoichiometric amount of an oxidizing agent for reaction with the reductant, which oxidizing agent is H 2 O 2 , urea hydrogen peroxide, alkali metal peroxide, alkali metal perborate, alkali metal percarbonate, alkali metal persulphate or the corresponding alkaline earth metal per salts, the oxidizing agent being exothermically reactive with the reductant to convert it to a surface active organic sulphonic acid or sulphonate and simultaneously to heat the preparation when dispensed; a pressurized gas (C) in at least one of the zones; and means for dispensing contents from both zones simultaneously and into contact with each other, whereby there is produced by exothermic reaction of the sulphinic acid or sulphinate and the oxidizing agent a heated cosmetic preparation including therein the organic sulphonic acid or sulphonate so produced, as a surface active constituent thereof. The cosmetic preparation may be a skin cream, body lotion, depilatory, skin tanning preparation, antiperspirant, personal deodorant, hair cream, hair lotion, hair gel, hair conditioner, shampoo, hair bleach, hair dye, hair rinse, make-up preparation, bath oil, facial cleaner composition (examples 2 to 9), astringent or after-shave lotion or shaving cream (examples 1 and 10 to 15). A prepared form is an aerosol in which the propellant may be a C 1 -C 4 hydrocarbon, a halogenated hydrocarbon or a compressed gas, e.g. oxygen, carbon dioxide or nitrogen. The catalyst for the production of the surfactant may be ammonium or an alkali metal molybdate or an alkali metal tungstate.
