Abstract
132,065. Ames, R. Sept. 18, 1918. Surface treatment with liquid materials.-Relates to machines for spreading tar or other liquid on roads, and to sand and grit-spreading machines, and consists in an arrangement wherein the tar, sand, or grit is expelled onto the road surface from bell-mouthed nozzles, each of which is provided with a transverse diaphragm onto one or both sides of which inclined jets of compressed air are directed. In the construction shown in Fig. 1, tar from the tar container is led by one or more vertical pipes B to a pipe A transverse to the vehicle. Several smaller pipes C lead to the nozzles F through cocks D. Each nozzle has a transverse diaphragm G onto both sides of which compressed air is directed from inclined orifices H. The compressed air may however be directed onto one side only of the diaphragm. The compressed air is derived from a small air-compressor or pump driven from one of the road wheels or by a separate motor. According to the Provisional Specification, the diaphragms of the grit-spreading nozzles may be ribbed radially to break up the stream of sand or grit.
