Abstract

1320212 Seaming non-metallic sheet material PRATT MFG CORP 18 Aug 1970 39656/70 Heading B5K [Also in Division B6] Continuous layers 59, 60 of packaging material are sealed transversely by a tool 46 which moves continuously in an orbital path and which participates in the movement of the layers 59, 60 along a portion of the path thereof. As shown, an endless belt 25 passes around rollers 23, 24, the shaft 21 of the roller 24 being driven from a drive shaft 28 which also drives shafts 30, 35 carrying discs 32, 36, respectively. Eccentric pins 39, 40 on the discs 32, 36, respectively, rotatably extend into holes 38, 41 in a pitman 37. A control bar 42 is pivoted at 43 and has a yoke 44 slidably connected therewith to provide a lost motion connection. The tool 46 comprising a seal bar heated by an electric heating element 50 is secured to the yoke 44 and has suitable sealing projections thereon to produce a desired seal pattern. The yoke 44 and the bar 46 are normally urged upwardly relative to the bar 42 by a spring 47. A pneumatic cup 48 is supported on top of the bar 42 and when compressed air is supplied to the cup 48 it acts on a piston 48<SP>1</SP>, Fig. 3, and its stem 49<SP>1</SP>, connected to the yoke 44, to urge the yoke 44 and the bar 46 downwardly against the action of the spring 47. An arm 51, Figs. 1 and 3, projects from the bar 42 and carries a cam follower 52 which coacts with a cam 53 rigidly mounted on a support 54. The arm 51 operates against a spring 55 on a rod 56 which is pivoted to the pitman 37 at 57 and extends slidably through the arm 51. The mechanism of Fig. 1 may support the bar 42 at one end only or the mechanism may be duplicated at the other end thereof. In operation, the layers 59, 60 which have been longitudinally sealed with articles to be packaged inserted therebetween are continuously fed by the belt 25 over a back-up plate 62. The arm 51 is urged by the spring 55 against an adjustable stop nut 58 to a position tilted upwardly slightly in a counter clockwise direction beyond the horizontal. As the follower 52 engages the cam 53, the arm 51 is tilted back to the horizontal. This slight tilting acts to accelerate the linear speed of the bar 46 which then travels at the same speed as the layers 59, 60 during the entire period of engagement with the layers which is about 30 degrees on each side of centre. When the follower 52 starts to travel up the left hand side of the cam 53, the spring 55 urges the arm 51 in a counterclockwise direction to result in a reverse tilting of the bar 46 until the arm 51 again contacts the nut 58. During the above operation, air pressure in the cylinder 48 urges the bar 46 into pressure sealing relationship with the layers 59, 60. In another embodiment (not shown), instead of a common drive for the layers to be sealed and the orbital movement of the sealer bar, a synchronized drive is used. In a further embodiment, the seal bar 46 is unheated and effects pressure sealing when heat is not required.
