Abstract

1320202 Clock operated dispensing devices D GRASSLIN [trading as DIETER GRASSLIN FEINWERKTECHNIK] 17 July 1970 [19 July 1969] 34723/70 Heading B8P [Also in Division H1] A clock operated device for dispensing contraceptive pills comprises a synchronous motor 2 driving a programme roller 4 and a wheel 5 secured to the roller 4 rotates a pill container 9 through a star wheel 7 and gear 8. Cam tracks and levers ensure that a dispensing lever 21 is locked when a pill should not be taken. Optical and acoustic alarms are fitted and the device can be used as an alarm clock by disconnecting the dispensing mechanism. The treatment cycle corresponds to twenty-one pill compartments 13 followed by a part 14 equivalent to a seven day cycle when no pills are taken. At the commencement of a 24 hour period a sensing member 18 on a lever 16 pivoted at 15 rides up an incline 26 on a cam 37 thereby pivoting the lever 16 and by means of a further pivoted lever 30 the dispensing lever 21 is locked in the closure position. After twelve hours the member 18 reaches an edge 35 on cam 37 and engages cam track 19. Meanwhile container 9 has rotated slightly and a pill has fallen into a delivery duct 23. The pivoting of lever 16 when member 18 falls from cam 37 to cam 19 causes the lever 21 to be unlocked and the pill is accessible. If the pill is not taken the gradual rotation of the roller 4 brings member 18 into a first gap 41 in cam 19 and the lever 16 pivots further and operates a switch 42, 43 whereby the optical and acoustic signals are set off. A number of gaps 41 ensure that the signals are repeated periodically. At the end of this twelve hour period if the pill is not removed the member 18 engages the edge 36 and the lever 21 is again locked in the closed position. During days twenty-two to twentyeight a cam 44 on the container engages a member 45 on lever 16 to swing the latter clear of cams 19, 37. The timing mechanism can be reset be a knob 47. The clock face (Fig. 2, not shown) also carries an indicator (66) showing the days of the week and a second indicator (57) behind which coloured sectors move in conjunction with the timing mechanism to indicate whether a pill should be taken, has been forgotten, or should not be taken.
