Abstract

1320150 Fruit-picking machines; tractor hitches E J WILLIAMS and P M APPLETON 1 Sept 1970 [19 Aug 1969] 41330/69 Headings A1F and A1P A tractor-mounted machine for harvesting soft fruit comprises a support structure 10 connected to a frame 12 by a pair of lugs 11 and the pivotted links 13, 14. A fluid-pressure cylinder fixed to the frame 12 and the link 13 serves to control the inclination of the support structure. Housed within the support structure 10 are a pair of endless chains 15, carrying a plurality of plucking fingers 16, driven by a hydraulic motor so that the facing fingers of each chain move upwardly. At the forward end of the machine is mounted a pair of guide plates 17 which guide the bushes between the sets of fingers 16, thus brushing the fruit, and some leaves and twigs, upwards over the top of the right hand chain and onto a lower conveyor 19 by way of a baffle 18. A stream of air, created by a fan 21, is drawn across their path as they fall from the baffle 18 and the leaves and twigs are discharged through an upwardly-directed duct 22. The fruit is carried by the conveyor 19 into trays carried on a support 20. The fan 21 is driven by a chain which also drives the chains 15, but if desired, additional sprockets may be used to vary the relative speed of the fan 21 and the chains 15. In addition, the guide plates 17 may include driven guide bars to retain the branches in a substantially vertical condition, and the duct 22 may be directed towards the ground.
