Abstract

131,940. Mond, A. Sept. 30, 1918. Coating-appliances, hand. - An appliance for doping aeroplane fabrics comprises a closed dopecontainer provided with a valve-controlled outlet for the fluid, a distributing roller mounted beneath the container adjacent to the outlet, and a plurality of rotary spreading brushes for evening the coating driven by the roller. The arrangement may be such that the dope falls on the distributing roller and is thence transferred to the fabric, or the dope may be fed by a spout on to the fabric direct, and the rotary brushes may be driven from a jockey roller mounted in advance of the brushes. An appliance constructed according to the latter arrangement is shown in Fig. 1. Dope is delivered from the container a by a spout x on to the fabric F and is evenly spread by the rotary 'brushes s<1>, s<2>, s<3>, which are driven in opposite directions successively, as shown, by belting t<1>, t<2>, t' and gearing y<1>, y<2>, z<1>, z<2> from the jockey roller w, to which acetone or other solvent is fed from an auxiliary container a<1> so as to prepare the fabric for the easy penetration of the dope. The container may be fitted with a partition v and air pressure may be applied at the valve r to adapt the device for use in an inclined or vertical position. In a modification shown in Fig. 3, the distributing roller e is mounted between, and projects beyond, the rotary brushes s, s<1>, and the container is rocked after each backward or forward stroke to bring each brush alternately into operative position. The roller and brushes may be mounted on a frame f removably attached to the container. Means may be provided, as shown in Fig. 4, for allowing a number of such doping appliances to be operated at the same time. The handles c are connected by easily detachable means such as bolts and fly-nuts to a cross-bar 1, which is reciprocated by a bar 2 and provided with guiding means, such as vertical extensible rods with wheels running on rails on the ground or overhead. All the rollers may be driven from a single revolving shaft extending along the cross-bar and provided with sprocket wheels, pulleys, or chain drive, the shaft being revolved by hand-operated gear. The several dope-containers are preferably fed from a central reservoir on the platform 3.
