Adding-apparatus; statistics, compiling. - Relates to a machine for printing under control of a file of perforated cards, a list of statistics according to a selected classification, with a total of all accumulative items, of the kind described in Specification 162,979, and comprises the classification selective control mechanism or " finder " for that machine. The purpose of the " finder " is to pull out of action the total printing coupling hook 276, Fig. 19, for every card in succession of the same classification, and on the arrival of a card of a new group to start the total printing, set the classification particulars of the group just ended on the type, to take a setting of the new group classification for discriminating following cards and retain it. The hook 276 is linked to an elbow lever from which a link 413 extends across the machine to the " finder," where it is pivoted to an arm 412, Fig. 10, fast on a shaft 411 carrying between a pair of arms 410 a cross-shaft 408 on which hangs a series of sets of four feelers 407 opposite four slides 394 working between 'guides and carrying a column of pins. At the start of each cycle, when the arm 213, Fig. 9, allows the pins to move forward it draws a link 413<1> so as to cause a spring slide (not shown) on it to engage an arm on the shaft 411, tending to rock it counter-clockwise. If the classification setting on the pins and slides 394 corresponds to that held locked on sets of slides 421, then the ends of the feelers 407 will be opposite notches 438, between tongues 436, 437 of the locked slides 421, and the shaft 411 can rock and disconnects the total lever coupling hook 276. If the card is of a different classification some of the feelers 407 will engage a tongue 436, and the total lever be rocked by the hook 276 and start total printing. The slides 421 are mounted and guided in a carriage 422 to which they are connected by springs 427, the carriage being movable to the right one step at every operation by a yoke 429 carried on a shaft 431 rocked by an arm 433 and lever from the link 413<1>. The slides 421 are locked set by a bail 439 journaled on the carriage and engaging one or other of a pair of teeth 440 on each side. The movement of the carriage is normally limited by a pin 469, Fig. 15, thereon engaging a stop pawl 468. At total printing, however, after the initial detection of a group change, the total lever 274, Fig. 19, being rocked pulls a link 4G1 to rock a shaft 457 which lifts a lever 452, Fig. 15, from engagement with a yoke 447, thus permitting a set of feelers 441 to take a setting for the group just completed from the sides 421 and pass it by means of links 443 and levers 444 to the differential mechanism and so set it in type. The lever 452 thereafter hitches a spring hook 471 on to a pin 472 on the normal stop pawl 468 so as to withdraw it and allow the carriage 422 to advance further, striking the teeth 437 of the slides 421 (unlocked from the bail 439 for this purpose, by an arm 476 attached to it being struck by the pawl 468) against slides 394 and take the new setting, which is locked by the bail 439 when the spring hook 471 is disengaged upon being struck by a pin 473 upon the carriage. The pin carrying slides 394 have tongues 401, 404 which can be engaged by yokes 402, 405 attached to the setting levers B<1>, B. By dropping either or both these yokes after first retracting all the pins by lifting the link 216, Fig. 9, either or both classification sets for which the yokes are adjusted can be put out of action so as to permit straight listing of the card particulars in any order.
