Abstract

1318738 Mixers H EGGERATH 22 Sept 1970 [23 Sept 1969] 45031/70 Heading B1C Apparatus for mixing building materials having molten components, e.g. asphalt, comprises a stationary annular trough 11 and a rotatably mounted device 14 carrying rotatable stirrers 12 projecting into the trough and burners 13 for heating the material. The trough has inside liners mounted on asbestos, and is also insulated on the outside. The device 14 also carries additional stirrers 15 which may be inclined and scrapers 16 for scraping the walls and base of the trough, and it is rotatably supported by a central bearing 17 and by rollers 19. The burners 13 are controlled by a temperature sensor located on the stirrers 15 or scrapers 16 to sense the mix temperature. The trough may also be heated by one or more fixed or rotating heating devices, e.g. burners, arranged on the inside and outside of the trough. A cover 20 is provided for the trough, and the stirrers 12 are covered at their tops with bent circular plates to keep the mix from the cover. A silo 23 for material, e.g. sand, chippings and powdered limestone, is connected to a transfer container 25 by an apportioning device 24, the container 25 having an upper stationary half 25a and a rotatably mounted lower half 25b extending from which is a duct 26 leading to the trough 11 and having a control flap therein for closing it during mixing operation. A bonding agent, e.g. bitumen, is supplied to the trough by a spraying or pouring device 27. A hoist 31 feeds the silo 23, and a flue 32 allows escape of gases from the mix via the duct 26 and container 25. The device 14 has its own drive means but it may be rotated by operation of the stirrers 12. To allow for expansion and contraction of the trough 11 it is mounted on slides and is maintained centrally located by stays extending like spokes from the trough to levers which are pivoted on a central housing and are connected to a vertically movable, spring-biased, centrally disposed plate, Figs. 2, 4 and 5 (not shown). During operation the trough 11 is first heated until a temperature sensor switches on the apportioning device 24 to feed material to the trough. The duct 26 is then closed and the bonding agent fed to the trough from the device 27. The mix is removed through opening 47 controlled by a slider or flap. In an alternative form of trough centring means. Fig. 6 (not shown), a central spring-biased plate is connected to the trough by radially disposed cables, chains or belts.
