Abstract

1317908 Coating STAUFFER-WACKER SILICONE CORP 7 April 1970 16458/70 Heading B2E [Also in Division C3] A primer composition for bonding silicone rubber to a substrate comprises powdered zinc, a condensate containing at least 35wt% of SiO 2 , obtained from a silane Si(OR) 4 in which R is a C 1-4 n-alkyl radical, water in amount 0.15- 0.5 mols per alkoxy group in the condensate, and an alkylene glycol mono- or di-ether or a dialkylene glycol dialkyl ether of b.p. 121- 150‹C and flash point 46-74‹C, the weight ratio of solvent: condensate being 0.5-10:1. There is preferably also present in the primer sufficient HCl to give a pH of 1.4-3.5; the zinc preferably amounts to 10-90wt% of the composition. In Examples a little aqueous HCl is added to 'ethyl silicate 40' in ethoxyethanol, or an ethyl polysilicate of 40% SiO 2 is boiled with MeOH and hydrolysed in mixed ethers; to these solutions is added zinc dust; the solutions are applied to stainless steel, Cu, brass, Al or Ti surfaces, and may be followed by a solution of methyl triacetoxysilane in CH 2 Cl 2 . To the primed metals are applied mixtures of a polydimethylsiloxane diol, Fe 2 O 3 , Si(OEt) 4 and dibutyltin dilaurate, or a grafted polysiloxane diol, Si(OEt) 4 , and dibutyltin dilaurate, which are cured at room temperatures.
