Abstract
1317886 Testing aircraft structures BRITISH AIRCRAFT CORP Ltd 20 Aug 1970 [12 June 1969] 29774/69 Heading B7G A method of applying testing loads to aerodynamic or hydrodynamic surface elements comprises applying to such an element 10 a flexible, resilient diaphragm 18 forming part of a pressure vessel 15, inflatable by pressurizing fluid. Apparatus for the method comprises a base-plate 11 having a reaction member 12 supporting the hollow pressure vessel 15 comprising a rigid back member 17 spaced from a neoprene rubber diaphragm 18 by a peripheral rubber member (19) Fig. 2 (not shown), bonded to both parts, an additional peripheral clamp is also provided for this purpose. Pressurized fluid delivered, through inlets (24, 25), to compartments of the pressure vessel divided by an extensible rubber partition wall 21 inflates the diaphragm and so causes varying loads, according to the fluid pressure, to act on the surface element 10 e.g. a missile wing, supported above vessel 15 on one side by bracket 16 and on the other by an angle member 29. The latter also prevents sidewards bulging of the inflated diaphragm. The amount of deflection is measured by gauges 26 through feelers 28 and for simulating pressure loads in high speed flight, the element surface temperature may be increased by infra-red heaters 27.
