1316936 Dynamo-electric machines JOSEPH LUCAS (INDUSTRIES) Ltd 29 Oct 1970 [10 Nov 1969 13 June 1970] 54872/69 and 28746/70 Heading H2A A device for sensing the rotational speed of a vehicle wheel comprises a toothed wheel 11 rotatable with the vehicle wheel and arranged to move past a winding 16 resiliently urged towards a layer 14 of non-magnetic material covering the crown of each tooth, the layer serving to maintain a constant distance between the winding and teeth. The movement of the teeth produces in the winding pulses having a frequency proportional to vehicle speed. The layer 14 may be of glass-filled nylon and may simply comprise such material surrounding the crown of each tooth. Alternatively the layer 14 may bridge the inter-tooth gaps and cover the crowns to form a continuous cylindrical surface. In the embodiment shown the wheel 11 is mounted in an annular casing 18 containing a non-magnetic, synthetic resin moulding 17 (e.g. of glass-filled nylon) carrying the winding 16 and urged against the layer 14 by a spring 22. The modifications the wheel 11 is toothed on a radially inner surface, Fig. 3, (not shown), or on an axial end surface, Fig. 4, (not shown).
