Abstract
1316917 Magneto-optical transducers INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORP 10 Nov 1971 [21 Dec 1970] 52115/71 Heading G5R A magneto-optical transducer for reading out data arranged on a moving magnetic medium 32 in blocks 32A, 32B of information bits comprises an optical scanner 16-22 which successively illuminates the blocks with polarized light, the light from each block being focused on an array of light detectors 26 so that each detector 26 receives light from a single bit. The collimated incident light beam 34 is directed from block to block by a deflector 18 via a polarizer 20 and a cylindrical lens 22 which focuses the beam into a line. Light from a block 32A is focused on the array 26 by a respective one 24A of an array of lenses 24, possibly via an analyzer 28. The transducer may include a magnetic transfer film (12), Fig. 1 (not shown), on a transparent substrate (14), the film (12) being magnetized by the magnetic tape (10) and scanned as above. The substrate may be a triangular or trapezoidal prism (38), (44), Figs. 3, 4 (not shown), to which the lenses 22 and 24 are attached. If more than one detector per track is provided, any lateral displacement of the tape (10) may be compensated by a servo control (30), Fig. 1 (not shown), which selects that detector which is centred on the track being read by using guide tracks on the tape (10).
