Abstract
1316537 Optical shutter F FRUNGEL 21 Dec 1971 [24 Dec 1970] 59352/71 Heading G2J A high-speed optical shutter operative at speeds of less than 100 Ás, to protect the eye against nuclear explosions, comprises two chambers defined by substantially parallel transparent plates 1, 2 and a circumferential frame 6, at least one electrically ignitable explosive charge 4 containing lamp-black 3 or evaporable wires to blacken the plates 1, 2, the chambers being disposed serially in the optical sense and in parallel as regards the blackening function. Preferably each chamber is supplied with electrically ignitable explosive charges. The intermediate plate 2 may be made adhesive or heatresistant. The plates 1, 2 may be made of optically transparent plastics material and are sealed to the frame by elastomeric material (e.g. silicone rubber). In an alternative embodiment Fig. 3 the outer plates 11 are screwed together with a sealing spacer 16 of silicone rubber into which is sealed the intermediate plate 12. Also a single explosive lamp-black charge 13, 14 serves both chambers. The two chambers may be evacuated such that the outer plates become slightly concave. If desired one chamber may contain lamp-black and the other an explosive wire.
