Abstract

1316145 Capacitors P R MALLORY & CO Inc 27 April 1970 [28 April 1969] 58851/72 Divided out of 1316144 Heading H1M In a method of manufacturing a plurality of capacitor units, metal strips 41 to 44 are laid side by side using pegs 11 to 15 and 21 to 25 of jig 100, metal strips 46 to 49 are laid side by side across them using pegs 16 to 20 and 26 to 30 with polymeric or polymerizable dielectric material interposed at least where the strips intersect, then further metal strips with interposed dielectric material are stacked with those in alternate planes registering, at least the strips in alternate planes being of film-forming metal having a dielectric oxide film formed thereon, the stack is compacted by pressure and severed along lines 61 to 65 and 66 to 70 to obtain the individual units. While the polymeric material may be placed between the strips as they are stacked it is preferred to anodise a strip continuously, coat it with the polymer by spraying, dip- or roller-coating and sever it into smaller strips for stacking. The anodic oxide may be porous, non-porous or a combination of these. The stack is compacted using a die which if necessary is electrically or fluid heated, or the stack may be heated by RF heating. Electrodes of opposite polarity extend to adjacent side faces and connection may be made to these by flame-spraying metal after excess polymer has been trimmed off (Fig. 8, not shown). Alternatively staples, rivets or screws may be employed. The polymeric material may be a thermoplastic addition polymer, condensation polymer, cellulosic material, polyether, polysiloxane, epoxy resin or a polymer based on a heterocyclic ring system, and numerous examples are given.
