Abstract
1316063 Continuous casting MONSANTO Co 8 June 1971 [9 June 1970] 19427/71 Heading B3F [Also in Division D1] A filament 17, e.g. of aluminium, freshly extruded from melt and which has a low tensile strength in the upstream region, is tensioned for wind-up by projecting it against a surface 13 which constrains the filament to move in a path such that a tensional force of about #A#<SP>2</SP> builds up in the filament (the filament having density # g./c.c., a cross-sectional area A cm.<SP>2</SP> and a velocity # cm./sec.) whereby the filament forms a freestanding loop 20 and is subjected thereafter to a further increase in tension and wound up. The surface may be concave as shown with, above the loop, a convex portion 15 over which the filament is drawn to increase tension before wind-up. In other constructions, a plurality of surfaces, which may be concave or flat, are arranged in cascade below each other, a convex roller then being used over which to pass the filament to increase its tension. The wind-up station may also be vertically above the surface whereby gravity supplies the additional tension.
