Abstract

1315845 Cardiac valve NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORP 8 June 1971 [12 May 1970] 22955/70 Heading A5R [Also in Division F2] A prosthetic heart valve comprises a ring 7 with three equi-angularly spaced axially extending legs 8 both the ring and legs being of textile fabric material coated with silicone rubber with 3 "D" shaped cusps 10 each attached to a "U" shaped, outwardly projecting flanges 9 by a lapel (11) Figure 2 (not shown) with the free edge of each flap, at the free ends of the legs 8, of such a length that they may abut one another along equiangular radial lines so closing the valve. The valve is sutured in the aortic or pulmonary root 16 with each flap 10 forming a chamber with the three natural sinus bulges 17, the free edges 12 being downstream. As flow of blood ceases, vortices are set up in the sinuses 17 causing the free edges 12 of the flap 10 to move inwards and close the valve.
