Abstract
1315813 Aromatic isocyanates IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 26 May 1970 [4 June 1969] 28198/69 Heading C2C Aromatic isocyanates are prepared by reacting aromatic nitro or nitroso compounds with carbon monoxide which is free from hydrogen or water vapour, but may contain an inert carrier gas, in the presence of a catalyst of at least one noble metal selected from Ru, Rh, Pd, Os, Ir and Pt or a compound thereof, in admixture with a composition obtained by contacting a manganese oxide precipitate containing bound alkali metal with an aqueous solution of salts of one or more heavy metals, that is Ti, V, Cr, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, Zr, Mo, Ag, Su, Sb, Ta, W, Re, Au, Hg, Tl, Pb, Bi, whereby to replace the alkali metal in said precipitate by said heavy metal and thereafter separating the solid from the liquid phase and drying it. The manganese oxide composition is preferably formed in the presence of an inert insoluble substance which will act as a catalyst support, e.g. kieselguhr, silica &c. Suitable starting materials include nitrobenzene, nitrotoluenes, nitroanisoles, fluoro-, chloro-, bromo- or iodonitro benzenes, ethyl pnitrobenzoate, α-nitronaphthalene m-benzonitrile, 3-nitrodiphenyl, 4-nitrodiphenylether, nitroacetophenone, dinitrobenzenes and the corresponding nitroso compounds.
