Abstract

1315644 Propellant grains FRANCE ARMED FORCES MINISTER OF 22 Dec 1971 [22 Dec 1970] 59813/71 Heading F3A A method of manufacturing a propellant grain comprises splitting a cylindrical block of propellant into two or more sectors, machining each sector to form longitudinal grooves with intervening fins 4a, 4b, joining the sectors to reconstitute. the cylindrical block, and coating the cylindrical surface of the block with a layer of combustion inhibitor 7. Nitrocellulose felt may be placed in a central bore in the block prior to coating. The propellant may be a double base explosive consisting of nitroglycerine, nitrocellulose, bentralite, combustion catalyst and acetylene black or a compound powder formed of ammonium perchlorate, aluminium and polybutadiene binder. The inhibitor 7 consists of a polyester lacquer with a methyl-ethyl ketone peroxide catalyst and a cobalt napthenate accelerator. The sectors are joined together with the aid of an adhesive or a solvent.
