Abstract

1315506 Automatic steering control TOKYO KEIKI K K 28 Aug 1970 [30 Aug 1969] 41576/70 Heading G3R A marine auto-pilot system has provision for course changes to be initiated manually, such changes then being carried out automatically, at least one of the constants and functions of the auto-pilot system being altered and others eliminated upon generation of the manual initiating means. As described, a signal from a compass corresponding to the heading of a ship is compared with a signal representing a desired heading so that any difference is effective through a dead band device, a PID controller, a limiter, and a follow-up servo-system operating the rudder to correct the heading. An alarm is operated if the difference becomes excessive. In Fig. 3, to set the heading, a knob 24 is depressed to engage a clutch 27 and the input to a differential gear 28 rotated. The differential gear compares the set heading with the actual heading # transmitted from the gyro-compass through a synchro transmission 21, 22 so that any difference is effective through a synchro 23 to actuate the steering control system 30. Operation of knob 24 to change the heading causes actuation of a switch 26 so that a transistor multi-vibrator 32 is triggered to energize electro-magnetic or transistor relays 34 for a limited time period duringÀwhich the heading is being charged. Relays 34 may remove the dead band and limiter devices and the integral control term, alter the time constant of the differential control term and disable the alarm. A resistor 33 is adjusted in dependence on the magnitude of the difference between the set and actual heading so that the response of the control system is altered by relays 34 for a corresponding period. Modifications are described in which the alteration in response is initiated when the difference between the set and actual heading exceeds a predetermined value.
