Abstract

1315431 Therapeutic pack CHATTANOOGA PHARMACAL CO 26 May 1971 17311/ 71 Heading A5R [Also in Division F4] A pack for use in applying moist heat to an area of a patient comprises a gel 5 which will expand and absorb water, a flexible and elastic water-impervious material 3 shaped with a plurality of compartments 4, a sheet of flexible water-pervious material (8) (Figs. 4, 6, not shown) which is relatively inelastic compared with the water-impervious material 3, both the materials 3, (8) being impenetrable by the gel and being secured along their edges. When in use, the pack is immersed in boiling or very hot water, whereupon the hot water penetrates the porous material (8) enabling the gel, which may be a bentonite gel, to fully hydrate. Then the compartments 4 of the pack swell considerably owing to the combination of the water-impervious material, which may be e.g. of a synthetic rubber or other plastics material, and the water-pervious material of the pack, the latter material not swelling nearly so much as the former. As a result there is a reasonable amount of contact between the pack and the patient. Another embodiment (Fig. 9 not shown) includes a layer (17) of a heatinsulating, closed-cell foam material such as polyurethane, enclosed within two sheets of water-impervious material in order to provide better heat insulation.
