1315310 Educational appliances STRUCTURAL COMMUNICATION SYSTEMS Ltd 20 Nov 1970 [24 Sept 1969 3 Dec 1969] 47073/69 and 59106/69 Heading G5G Question-and-answer apparatus is provided with manually operable switches for indicating student responses and means to provide a visual representation whereby the actual responses may be assessed against a set of preferred responses. In a first embodiment (Fig. 8) a plurality of possible responses to a question are indicated in areas 37 of a sheet which has been inserted through a slot 35 in the apparatus casing 34. Each possible response is repeated twice so that after a student has selected one or more such responses by moving a corresponding one or more of slides 36, the wording of the response is still visible. The slides 36 actuate switches so that when a button 38 is depressed one or more of lamps 39 are illuminated. A card 40 placed over the lamps and with apertures through which the lamps project has indications (Fig. 10, not shown) whereby the correctness or otherwise of the response can be ascertained and directions for further instruction (a suitable book being supplied) if incorrect responses have been made. A counter 39 records the number of tries. A record card (Fig. 11, not shown) may be provided as part of card 40 on which the student can record his performance, the card being suitable for computer input. The responses may be divided into sections with a plurality of buttons 38 being provided and locking means for the slides 36. A modified arrangement with push button switches is illustrated in Fig. 1 (not shown), a single overlay sheet with question, possible responses and response evaluation indications being provided in this case (Fig. 2, not shown). The easing 34 comprising a student console may be electrically connected to a remote set of response indicator lamps (Fig. 2, not shown) which may supplement or replace the set 39. Alternative connections may be provided whereby the illuminations of the two sets of lamps either correspond or do not correspond. Several student consoles may be connected to a combined remote response indicator board (Fig. 5, not shown). A data processor may be connected (Figs. 6 and 7, not shown) to evaluate the responses and illuminate further lamps to indicate responses which are particularly strong or particularly weak. The connections between the switches and the lamps may be varied by means of punched cards insertable between crossed conductors to establish conducting paths corresponding to the punched apertures.
