Abstract
131,514. Humphreys, G. Nov. 4; 1918. Projectiles.-Relates to the attachment of ballistic caps to shell noses, and consists in making the shell nose 2 and the ballistic cap 1 with corresponding conical seats 3, 3a and with studs 4 on one element adapted to fit in grooves 6 in the other to secure the two parts together. Longitudinal or approximately longitudinal approach grooves 5 enable the studs 4 to pass into line with the grooves 6, which are made wavy or helical so that a rotation of the parts relatively to each other causes their conical seats to be tightened and to bind together. When wavy grooves are used, a stop is provided in them to prevent rotation when the shell is discharged. Locating-notches 8, 8<a> are made on the shell and on the ballistic cap to enable these parts to be assembled in correct alinement by the sensation of touch without visual examination.
