Abstract

1314943 Droplet pen for recording instruments INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORP 19 April 1971 [13 March 1970] 23175/71 Heading B6P A liquid droplet dispenser, e.g. for an ink jet printer, comprises a tube 1 e.g. of nickel, having one end connected to a liquid reservoir 3, e.g. of ink under pressure, and the other end formed with a nozzle 1a, a coil 5 for carrying alternating current and causing vibration in the tube by magnetostrictive action, being provided for inducing longitudinal vibrations in said tube to cause droplet dispersal from said nozzle. The tube may be rigidly fixed to a bracket 6 and to the reservoir at 2a thus forming nodes 2a<SP>1</SP>, 6a at positions corresponding to fractions of the wavelength of the vibrations and producing resonance. A damper 10, comprising a metal plate (11), Fig. 2 (not shown), mounted on the tube between two copper covered fixed plates (12L), (12r), and forming a capacitor providing feedback signals to said vibratory mechanism, may be provided to maintain the amplitude of the vibrations at any desired level. A permanent magnet 7 may be used to stabilize the vibrations in the tube.
