Abstract
1314633 Electro-polishing surgical needles ETHICON INC 19 April 1971 [29 Jan 1970] 20696/71 Heading C7B [Also in Division H1] Surgical needles are distributed over a platinum grid surface 32 of a magnetic anode, the anode rotated, and needles distributed on the other surfaces. The anode consists of ceramic magnets 15 clamped between pivoted titanium backing sheets 33 and the grids 32. The loaded anode is placed in a ceramic vat 48, containing 70 parts orthophospheric acid and 30 parts hydroxyacetic acid, between cathodes 45, 46 having plates 51. After polishing, the anode is removed from the bath, allowed to drain, transferred to a fourstation rinse tank 54, and then dipped in orthophospheric acid and a wetting agent. The needles may be polished several times. Residual polarity may be removed by an electromagnet. Fumes from the polishing bath are removed through a duct 65.
