Abstract

1314572 Seaming non-metallic sheet. material ILFORD Ltd 19 April 1971 [4 Feb 1970] 5405/70 Heading B5K The overlapping ends of two lengths 8, 9 of thermoplastic film are spliced together by an ultrasonic welding horn 1, having an elongate working surface 3 extending across the width of the overlapping ends, and a wheel 4 which traverses across the overlapping ends to force them against the vibrating working surface 3, the wheel 4 being biased towards the horn 1 but being prevented from approaching closer thereto than a predetermined distance. The working surface of the horn 1 is radiused as shown and the horn is attached to a transducer 2 of either piezo-electric or magnetostrictive type. Means 6, 7 are provided for locating the overlapping film ends. The wheel 4 is biased towards the horn 1 by a pneumatic cylinder 5 and is attached by an arm 12, Fig. 3, to a sliding carriage 13 traversable along guides 14, 15 by a rack-and-pinion gear 16 driven by a variable speed drive (not shown). The speed at which the wheel 4 is traversed over the films 8, 9 is pre-set on the variable speed drive. The height of an adjustable stop 17 is adjusted against the arm 12 to ensure that the wheel 4 cannot approach closer to the horn 1 than a predetermined distance. If desired, the wheel 4 is toothed for spot welding. Specified thermoplastic films are polyester polypropylene, polycarbonate and polystyrene. The films may comprise fillers and/or plasticizers such as cellulose triacetate or polyamide. Emulsion coated film is also specified.
