Abstract
131,450. Roe, A. V. Aug. 21, 1918. Straps and bands.-The connexion between an aviator's harness and the fuselage of a machine comprises essentially an extensible spring which. when stretched beyond its limit of elasticity, remains stretched, whereby in case of a sudden heavy load on the spring-such as one due to a bad landing-there is no recoil of the spring. The spring 1 is a coil formed preferably of mild steel of strip, round, square, or rectangular section. The ends are either twisted together as shown at 4, to form a loop 3 at each end, or the ends may be secured together by thin wire 18, Fig. 5, placed in notches cut in the ends. The loops 3 may be connected at one end by a shackle 13, Fig. 2, to a lug 15 secured to the frame 6, and at the other end by another shackle 11 to cords 8, adjustable by means of a screw 7 and nut, the screw being connected to the aviator's harness 5. In the form shown in Fig. 4, two weaker tension springs 19, made of spring steel, are employed, one on each side of the main spring 1 of limited elasticity, the ends of all the springs being pivoted to pairs of plates 20, 26. The pins 25 are adjustable in the holes 27, so as to adjust the tensions of the springs 19. Instead of the springs 19, tubular telescopic casings containing compression springs may be used. In the form shown in Fig. 5, only one additional tension spring 28 is used, one end of which is adjustably held to a U-shaped plate 30 by an adjustable screwed eye bolt 31, and the other to duplicate plates 29. In this arrangement, the spring 28 alone stretches under a light load. but when the parts are stretched to the positions indicated in dot-and-dash lines, that is when the pivots 12, 24, 22 and 21 are in alinement, the spring 1 also is extended, and, when stretched beyond its limit of elasticity, remains extended,
