Abstract

1314477 Breaker assemblies for pneumatic tyres BRIDGESTONE TIRE KK 22 June 1971 [22 June 1970] 29156/71 Heading B7C [Also in Division C7] A pneumatic tyre has a breaker 5 disposed between a carcass 3 and tread rubber 4, the breaker being reinforced by metallic cords 6, at least the radially outermost layer of cords 7 being made wholly of a metal which is resistant to corrosion by air and moisture, such that in use cord failure due to corrosion by air and moisture seeping through cracks in the tread rubber 4 is prevented. The corrosion resistant cords 7 may be made of stainless steel, and the stainless steel used may comprise from 9 to 26% chromium, from 6 to 31% nickel, less than 1À2% carbon, less than 2% silicon, less than 3% manganese, less than 0À5% phosphorus, not more than 0À2% sulphur, and an amount of molybdenum and copper sufficient to enhance the corrosion resistance of the steel, the balance being iron, all percentages being by weight. The stainless steel cords may be made by twisting together several stainless steel wires, each having a diameter between 0À1 and 0À4 mm. The corrosion resistant cords are preferably coated with rubber and may be plated with brass prior to coating in order to improve bonding between the cord and the rubber.
