Abstract

1314450 Making honeycomb girders; welding by fusion METALLEICHTBAUKOMBINAT VEB 3 June 1970 26789/70 Headings B3A and B3R A method of making honeycomb girders 32 comprises clamping a pair of webbed girders on opposite sides of a clamp beam 7 in side-byside, spaced, parallel relationship, with their webs in a common plane, moving the clamped girders to a processing station 2, 2<SP>1</SP> where each web is cut along a line having a trapezial waveform, turning the two inner halves through 180 degrees about the longitudinal axis of the clamp beam and welding the girder halves together to form a honeycomb girder. I-section girders are clamped in pairs at a station 1 and moved to the stations 2, 2<SP>1</SP> on a roller conveyer 9. A cutting head 11 cuts through the webs of a pair of girders and when the girders at the station 2 are cut, the head is swung over to the station 2<SP>1</SP> to cut the girders of the second pair. After cutting, pusher means 10 move the clamped halves outwardly, while turning means 13 is raised to the level of the beam 7, which is provided with a shaft end (20) and a clutch member, Fig. 6 (not shown). A clutch (19) is engaged and a motor (18) rotates the beam through 180 degrees about its longitudinal axis. The outer girder halves are moved back by the pushers 10 after the turning means 13 has been lowered and the lands 23 of the opposed cut edges are brought into contact. Support arms 25 are moved up under the edges to be joined and four torches 30 simultaneously weld four pairs of lands 23 of the girders at the station 2. The welding head 28 then moves along a track 27 to weld the next group of projections and so on. When the girders have been welded together, the head 28 moves to an intermediate station 31. In the meantime, the girders at the station 2<SP>1</SP> have been cut and the inner halves turned. These girders are then welded either by the head 28 following a circulatory path or by a second welding head 28<SP>1</SP> following a reciprocatory path. A plurality of cutting heads 11 may also be provided, in which case there is an additional intermediate station 31<SP>1</SP>. The cutting and welding heads are selectively controlled from the stations 31, 31<SP>1</SP>, preferably by a programme control system. While the girder at station 2<SP>1</SP> is being welded, the completed girder 32 from station 2 passes on the conveyer 9 to a lowering station 3. The girder is released so that it lies on a table (36), Fig. 7 (not shown), and the clamp beam 7 with its associated clamps moves back to the station 1.
