Abstract

1314110 Discharge display tubes WESTERN ELECTRIC CO Inc 23 Dec 1970 [24 Dec 1969] 61072/70 Headings G4H and G5C [Also in Division H1] A display arrangement comprises a stack of display devices 101, 102, 103 each of which has an array of crosspoint display regions defined by a first and second set of conductors such as R11-R111 and C11-C18, with a gas in each of said regions and light attentuating means 121, 122 between each adjacent pair of arrays. The gas and the conductors may be separated by dielectric material 51, 52 in the form of sheets, or alternatively, Fig. 5, (not shown), each conductor may be individually encased by dielectric material and removably mounted in the stack. By addressing suitable discharge voltages to selected cross-point regions, an array of discharges each of brightness depending on which, if any, of the devices have a discharge at a particular point, may be seen from the viewing surface. The light attentating factor of each of light attenuating means is preferably 2, which with n devices permits display of a grey side having 2<SP>n</SP> steps. This arrangement is particularly suitable if the input is in binary form which can be addressed to the devices using circuitry described with reference to Fig. 6 which shows three display cells Xa, Xb Xc of a single cross-point. A sustaining voltage insufficient to initiate a discharge is applied across cells Xa, Xb, Xc from source 620 through OR gates 623. An address circuit 630 has two sets of outputs, one set being leads 631 to 63m which define the cross-point, in this example lead 635, and the second set D1 to D4 which determine the brightness of the display at that cross-point. Address gates 645-648 each have one input terminal connected to lead 635 and the other connected to respective ones of leads D1 to D4, the outputs being taken to the second inputs of OR gates 623. An input circuit 650 receives a binary input signal representing the brightness of the display required and the bits of the signal are fed one-by-one to address circuit 630 whereby the required combination of discharges in cells Xa, Xb, Xc is achieved.
