Abstract
1313730 Endarteriectomy apparatus COOK INC 31 Aug 1971 [9 Nov 1970] 40549/71 Heading A5R [Also in Division F2] Apparatus 10 for removing arterioscelerotic material from a body vessel 105 comprises a rod 70 having an axis, proximal end and distal end, means 30 secured to the proximal end of said rod for oscillating said rod about its axis, and a looped tip 72 secured to the distal end of said rod. Operation. Upon operation of motor 11, springs 16, 17 rotate and cause rotation of the shafts 36, 43 of the convertor 30. The rotary coupling 47 rotates with shaft 43 forcing the ball 50 to rotate within the slot 54 in the same direction as springs 16, 17. In addition, motion of the ball 50 will cause the centre coupling 52 to oscillate about fastener 51 in the direction of arrows 81. Elbow coupling 60 thus oscillates and imparts oscillatory motion to rod 70. An endarteriectomy is performed by first making an incision into the artery (Fig. 5 not shown) and introducing the rod 70 inside. The loop 72 is located between the medial layer (102) (Fig. 6 not shown) and adventitial layer (101) to position the arterioscelerotic material inside loop 72. The looped tip 72 is then oscillated by converter 30 and motor 11 and advanced slowly along the artery. The arteriscelerotic material is stretched away from the adventitial layer and the intact core (107) is then removed from the artery using a haemostatic clamping device (125). A debinding instrument (135) may be passed into the artery to remove any remaining arterioscelerotic material.
