Abstract
1313584 3,5-Dihydroxy-6-iodo steroids and their use in the preparation of #<SP>4</SP>-3-oxo-steroids CIBA-GEIGY AG 22 April 1970 [22 April 1969] 19196/70 Heading C2U A 3-hydroxy-5α,6α-oxido grouping in a steroid is converted into a #<SP>4</SP>-3-oxo grouping by treating the starting material with 1 mol equivalent of hydrogen iodide, oxidizing the resulting 3-hydroxy-6#,5α-iodohydrin to the corresponding 3-ketone and treating this with a dehydrating agent capable of converting a 3-oxo-5α-hydroxy grouping to a #<SP>4</SP>-3-oxo grouping or a reducing agent capable of converting a halohydrin to an olefine, with deiodination of any #<SP>4</SP>-6-iodo-3-oxo compound formed or isomerization of any #<SP>5</SP>-3-oxo compound formed. In the products functionally converted hydroxy or oxo groups may be liberated and/or free OH groups may be esterified, etherified, acetalized or ketalized. Novel intermediates are 3α,5α or 3#,5α-dihydroxy-6#-iodo-pregnane compounds.
