Abstract

1313582 Pigment/polymer compositions CIBA-GEIGY AG 21 April 1970 [22 April 1969] 19042/70 Headings C3F and C3P Pigment/polymer compositions useful for colouring materials such as thermoplastic resins, cyclized rubber, cellulose acetates, lacquers and printing inks are produced by (I) mixing (a) an aqueous dispersion of a copolymer prepared by emulsion polymerization of styrene and one or more C 1 -C 12 -alkyl acrylates and/or methacrylates with (b) an organic solvent which under the conditions of mixing dissolves the copolymer and forms, with the water present, a two-phase system in which the ratio of the surface tension of the organic solvent-rich phase to that of the water-rich phase is less than 1, and optionally with (c) a pigment in aqueous dispersed form to form a water-in-oil emulsion, and (II) mixing the emulsion, optionally after removal of the aqueous phase, with further water and, if not present in step I, pigment in aqueous dispersed form or, if present in step I and, if desired, further such pigment such that the water and organic solvent form a solution, and (III) kneading the pigment/copolymer mass. at or above the softening temperature of the copolymer, and removing water/organic solvent solution. The organic solvent used may be, for example, methyl ethyl ketone, isopropanol or n-butanol. Pigments specified are titanium dioxide, iron oxide, lampblack, gas black, azo pigments, phthalocyanines which may be chlorinated, anthraquinones, vat dyestuffs, and pigments of the quinacridone, dioxazine, perinone, perylene-tetracarboxylic acid diimide or indigoid series. In examples the pigment/ polymer compositions are incorporated into (a) polyethylene, (b) a printing ink comprising a mixture of polymethyl methacrylate, polyvinyl chloride and cellulose acetobutyrate dissolved in tetrahydrofuran/methyl isobutyl ketone, (c) a coating composition (applied to various metal surfaces) comprising vinyl chloride/vinyl acetate/maleic acid copolymer, methyl ethyl ketone, toluene, tin mercaptide stabilizer and epoxidized soya bean oil, (d) polymethyl methacrylate, (e) a polycarbonate and (f) polystyrene.
