Abstract

1313373 #-(1#3)-Glucans AJINOMOTO CO Inc 13 July 1970 [14 July 1969] 33972/70 Heading C3U A #-(1 # 3)-glucan having anti-tumou<SP>r</SP> activity possesses aldehyde groups derived by oxidation of glycol linkages of a glucan having #-(1 # 3) linkages in the main chain and at least one linkage selected from α-(1 # 2), #-(1 # 2), α-(1 # 4), #-(1 # 4), α-(1 # 6) and #-(1 # 6) linkages in the main chain and/or in a side chain. The starting glucan may be #-pachyman or laminarin. The glycol link may be cleaved using, e.g., periodic acid, sodium periodate or lead tetra-acetate, in aqueous solution in the dark, and at 0-300‹ C., for 20-72 hours. The cleaved #-(1 # 3)-glucan product may be modified to increase stability by reduction of some of the aldehyde groups to hydroxymethyl groups, using sodium borohydride or lithium aluminium hydride. Similarly the oxidized glucan, or the oxidized and reduced glucan, may be subjected to mild hydrolysis, using, e.g., dilute aqueous H 2 SO 4 at 5-30‹ C.
