Abstract

1313326 Respiratory appliances INSTITUT FUR TECHNOLOGIE DER GESUNDHEITSBAUTEN 17 Aug 1970 39591/70 Heading AST A respiration aiding apparatus comprises an air-fed device 1 to produce oxygen or oxygenenriched air, and a reservoir 7 connected to the device 1 to contain the oxygen or enriched air supplied thereby, the reservoir being provided with an outlet communicating with an inhalation device via a device for metering the oxygen or enriched air and comprising a valve for setting its flow rate. The air-fed device or oxygen producer 1 comprises an electrolytic cell 2 which decomposes distilled water into oxygen and hydrogen, a reaction chamber 5 for combining the hydrogen released from the cell 2 with the oxygen of atmospheric air to form water, and a spare tank 6 in which there is an ion exchange cartridge, to compensate for water losses in the circuit. Connected to the oxygen producer 1 is an excess-pressure reservoir 7 having a reducing valve 8 at its outlet, and connected to the reservoir 7 is a heating device 9, and a humidifying device 10. Following on the humidifying device 10 is connected a device 15 for measuring out the oxygen or oxygenenriched air. A valve 16 sets the appropriate supply pressure for the particular patient and a valve 20 opens in synchronism with the breathing cycle of the patient. A thermistor 19 placed in the flow path of air breathed through the patients nostril is used to control the opening and closing of the valve 20. A flexible tube 17 leading from said measuring device 15 is attached to the other nostril of the patient. In an alternative device, Figure 2 (not shown) the oxygen producer (1) works on the principle of diffusion, a diaphragm (23) of a material having a permeability greater to oxygen than to nitrogen divides the housing into two chambers (24) and (25). A reduction pump (28) at the outlet of the chamber (25) draws the oxygen-enriched air through the diaphragm into an excess pressure reservoir (7) having a reducing valve 8 at its outlet. The connecting line (17) from the valve (16) to a breathing mask has a specific flow resistance, this flow resistance being chosen to match the breathing capacity of the patient.
