Abstract

1313250 Induction heating CHISSO CORP 8 Nov 1971 51787/71 Heading H5H An electric heating apparatus for walls, floors or roads comprises at least two juxtaposed ferromagnetic pipes 25 which do not form a closed electric circuit, an insulated conductor 26 passing in series through the pipes and connected to an A.C. source 36, the thickness of the pipes being at least twice the skin depth of A.C. induced therein so that in operation a secondary current is induced in both the inner and outer skin portions of the ferromagnetic pipes to generate heat therein. The pipes are covered by the material forming the wall floor or road and may be insulated by a covering of paint, coal tar, polyvinyl chloride, polyethylene or an insulating tape. The ends of the pipes 25 are joined by insulating bends 32, 33, 34 and a connecting box 35. Bends 32, 33, 34 may be made of steel provided they are insulated from pipes 25. To detect a fault in insulating conductor 26 the neutral points 49 of the pipes 25 are connected together and to a voltage detector 38. During normal operation no voltage occurs in the wire 39 joining the pipes and the detector does not operate. If a fault develops in conductor 26 in a pipe 25 the potential of the pipe is raised to actuate detector 38 and operate circuit breaker 37 which interrupts the supply.
