Abstract
1313204 Polymerizing unsaturated hydrocarbons KUREHA KAGAKU KOGYO KK 19 June 1970 [20 June 1969] 29979/70 Heading C3P Polymeric materials suitable for the preparation of paper substitutes are made by polymerizing an olefin in the presence 0À1 to 20 weight per cent of a polymer derived solely from acetylene or a hydrocarbon derivative thereof. The acetylene polymer may be derived from acetylene, phenylacetylÞne, butyne-1 or hexyne-1, using a catalyst comprising an aluminium trialkyl and a titanium chloride or alkoxide, or a nickel compound and sodium borohydride, and optionally a solvent such as benzene or hexane. After purging residual acetylene with an inert gas ethylene or propylene may be added and the polymerization continued. In examples acetylene is polymerized in (1) nheptane and (2) benzene in the presence of triethyl aluminium and titanium trichloride and the reactors purged with argon. Subsequently (1) ethylene and titanium tetrachloride and (2) propylene, triethylaluminium and titanium trichloride are added and polymerization continued. The products are pressed into sheets and biaxially oriented by stretching.
