Abstract

1313182 Mixing flowing liquids; polymerisation apparatus GOODYEAR TIRE & RUBBER CO 2 Sept 1970 [30 Sept 1969] 41917/70 Headings B1C and B1X In a method of and apparatus for mixing liquid reactants and escpecially for making polyurethanes the reactants are metered continuously by positive displacement pumps 2, 5 to a pressure-sensing device 9 and thence to a mixer 3 containing a labyrinth 8. The device 9 senses the pressure-differential between the supply lines and shuts down the apparatus if it exceeds a predetermined amount. If the reactants are supplied at a mixing chamber pressure of 1500-3000 p.s.i. the differential should not exceed 100 p.s.i. and the device 9 is preferably within 100 supply line diameters of the mixing chamber. The labyrinth 8 may consist of a rigid or resilient gauze of filaments such as polyethylene, polypropylene, polyesters, glass, steel or aluminium. The supply lines may have heat exchange jackets 6, 7.
