Abstract

1313153 Shock-absorbing devices BARROW HEPBURN EQUIPMENT Ltd 28 July1971 [4 Aug 1970] 37643/70 Heading F2E A suspension line 3 is fitted with a shockabsorber comprising one or more lengths 1, 2 of web assembled or folded to provide a plurality of plies joined by tear stitching or by binder yarns or threads forming an integral part of the web material, the absorber being in parallel with a reach of the suspension line folded to lie adjacent to the absorber and held together as a unitary pack; the absorber plies progressively tear apart under shock loading with the reach of suspension line remaining slack due to the folds. The absorber 1, 2 and suspension line 3 are held together by a heat-shrunk plastics covering 4 which does not materially interfere with the absorption of load. The plies 1, 2 may completely separate or the suspension line 3 may become taut before complete ply separation (Fig. 2, not shown). The combined suspension line and shock-absorber are used in a safety harness for a workman, one end of the line 3 being attached to a rope, and the other end being attached to a belt.
